Kustutamismeetodi refers to a method of extinguishing fires. The fundamental principle behind any fire extinguishing method is to disrupt the fire tetrahedron, which comprises fuel, oxygen, heat, and the chemical chain reaction. By removing or reducing one or more of these elements, a fire can be controlled and extinguished.

Several common kustutamismeetodi exist, each targeting different aspects of the fire tetrahedron. Cooling, or reducing heat, is a widely used technique. Water, for example, is effective because it absorbs heat as it turns into steam, thereby lowering the temperature of the burning material below its ignition point. Smothering, which involves removing or reducing oxygen, is another common approach. This can be achieved by covering the fire with a blanket, sand, or by using specialized extinguishing agents like foam or carbon dioxide. Foam works by creating a barrier between the fuel and the air, while carbon dioxide displaces oxygen.

Interrupting the chemical chain reaction is a more advanced kustutamismeetodi that utilizes extinguishing agents like dry chemicals or halons. These agents interfere with the molecular reactions that sustain the combustion process.
