Kuparinitraattia

Kuparinitraattia, also known as copper(II) nitrate, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Cu(NO3)2. It is a blue crystalline solid that is readily soluble in water. Copper(II) nitrate typically exists as a trihydrate, Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, which is the most common form encountered.

This compound is derived from copper and nitric acid. It can be prepared by reacting copper metal with concentrated nitric acid, although this reaction also produces nitrogen dioxide gas. Alternatively, it can be formed by reacting copper(II) oxide or copper(II) hydroxide with nitric acid.

Kuparinitraattia has several applications. It is used as a catalyst in various chemical reactions, particularly in organic synthesis. It also finds use as a mordant in dyeing and printing textiles, helping to fix dyes to the fabric. In agriculture, it has been employed as a fungicide and a source of copper for plant nutrition, though its use in this area is subject to environmental regulations.

When heated, copper(II) nitrate decomposes. The anhydrous form decomposes to copper(II) oxide, nitrogen dioxide, and oxygen. The hydrated form also undergoes decomposition, releasing water vapor along with the other products. Kuparinitraattia is an oxidizing agent and should be handled with care, as it can react vigorously with combustible materials. It is also considered an irritant and can be harmful if ingested or inhaled.
