Kukës

Kukës is a city located in northeastern Albania, serving as the administrative center of the Kukës District and the larger Kukës County. It is situated in a mountainous region, near the border with Kosovo. The city's strategic location has historically made it an important center for trade and transportation.

The current location of Kukës is a result of the construction of the Fierza Dam on the Drin River in the 1970s, which led to the flooding of the old town. The new city was subsequently built on a higher plateau. The Fierza Lake, created by the dam, is a prominent feature of the landscape and offers opportunities for recreation.

Kukës is known for its strong sense of community and its resilience. During the Kosovo War in the late 1990s, the city became a vital transit point and a temporary home for hundreds of thousands of refugees, earning international recognition for its humanitarian efforts.
