Kujudês

Kujudês is a member of the Timorese people, specifically a subgroup of the Mambai people, who are part of the larger Austronesian-speaking population of East Timor. They primarily inhabit the northern part of the island, although some Kujudês communities can also be found in the central and southern regions.

The Kujudês language, also known as Tukudede, is a closely related dialect to the Mambai language and is spoken by the Kujudês people. The language is part of the Austronesian language family and is rich in cultural and historical significance for the Kujudês community.

Traditionally, the Kujudês people have lived in small villages, engaging in subsistence farming and fishing to make a living. They are skilled in crafts such as woodcarving, weaving, and textile production. The Kujudês people are also known for their animistic spiritual practices and traditional ceremonies, which play a vital role in their social and cultural lives.

Despite the influence of Christianity and other external factors, the Kujudês people have managed to maintain their unique cultural identity and traditions. However, the Kujudês community has faced challenges such as migration, urbanization, and poverty, which have threatened their cultural heritage and way of life.

Efforts have been made to document and preserve the Kujudês language and cultural practices, including language documentation projects and cultural festivals that showcase the community's traditions. These initiatives aim to promote awareness and appreciation for the Kujudês people's rich cultural heritage and to support their continued existence as a distinct ethnic group within East Timor.
