Kualanamu

Kualanamu International Airport is the primary international airport serving Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located in Deli Serdang Regency, near the town of Kualanamu, about 37 kilometers northwest of Medan’s city center. The airport was built to replace Polonia International Airport as the city’s main air gateway and opened in 2013. It was designed to handle growing passenger traffic and to support international services.

The airport features a modern terminal complex and facilities intended to accommodate both domestic and international flights. It serves as a hub for several Indonesian carriers, including Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batik Air, and Citilink, with a range of routes to major Indonesian cities as well as several international destinations in neighboring countries.

Kualanamu is connected to Medan and the surrounding region primarily by road. Taxis, shuttle buses, and private car services serve the airport, and a number of transit options are available. There is no rail link to the airport currently. Transport links are planned to be expanded as part of regional development programs.

The airport has contributed to regional air travel growth and is part of Indonesia’s broader effort to upgrade airport infrastructure in Sumatra, improving international access and tourism potential for North Sumatra.
