Kromoszómaszakasz, also known as chromosomal aberration or chromosomal anomaly, refers to a change in the number or structure of chromosomes. These changes can occur during the formation of reproductive cells (gametes) or after conception. Chromosomal aberrations are a significant cause of genetic disorders and can lead to various health issues, including developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and physical abnormalities.

Chromosomal aberrations are broadly categorized into two main types: numerical and structural. Numerical aberrations involve an abnormal number of chromosomes. For example, aneuploidy occurs when there is an extra or missing chromosome. Down syndrome, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21), is a well-known example of aneuploidy. Polyploidy, on the other hand, involves having one or more complete extra sets of chromosomes. Structural aberrations involve changes in the structure of one or more chromosomes. These can include deletions (loss of a chromosome segment), duplications (repetition of a chromosome segment), translocations (exchange of segments between non-homologous chromosomes), and inversions (reversal of a chromosome segment).

The causes of chromosomal aberrations are diverse and can include errors during meiosis (cell division that produces gametes), exposure to environmental mutagens like radiation or certain chemicals, and inherited predispositions. Many chromosomal aberrations are not heritable and arise spontaneously. The detection of chromosomal aberrations is typically performed through cytogenetic techniques such as karyotyping or chromosomal microarray analysis. While many chromosomal aberrations are incompatible with life, some can lead to live births with varying degrees of associated health conditions. Genetic counseling is often recommended for individuals and families affected by chromosomal aberrations to understand the implications and recurrence risks.
