Kromogeeniset

Kromogeeniset is a term used in microbiology to describe certain types of agar culture media. These media are specifically designed to differentiate between bacteria based on their ability to produce specific enzymes. When a bacterium possessing the relevant enzyme grows on a kromogeeninen medium, a chromogenic substrate within the agar is acted upon, resulting in the formation of a colored precipitate. This color change visually identifies the presence of that particular enzyme and, by extension, the bacterial species or group that produces it.

The principle behind kromogeeniset media relies on the enzymatic cleavage of a colorless chromogenic substrate. This substrate is a molecule that, when broken down by a specific enzyme, releases a colored compound. Different kromogeeniset media are formulated with various chromogenic substrates to detect a wide range of enzymatic activities, such as the production of beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, or alkaline phosphatase. This allows for rapid and accurate identification of bacteria directly from a culture plate.

These media are widely used in clinical microbiology for the identification of pathogens, in food safety testing to detect contamination, and in environmental monitoring.
