Kouyorsuch

Kouyorsuch is a genus of extinct crocodylomorph that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Niger. The genus name, Kouyorsuch, is derived from the Tamasheq word "kouyor" meaning "ancient" and the Greek word "suchos" meaning "crocodile." Kouyorsuch belongs to the family Notosuchidae, a group of terrestrial crocodylomorphs characterized by their robust build and specialized dentition.

The only known species within this genus is Kouyorsuch akilience. Fossils of Kouyorsuch have been discovered in the Echkar Formation, dating back approximately 95 million years. The remains suggest an animal that was well-adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle, diverging from the more aquatic adaptations seen in modern crocodilians. Its skull exhibits features indicative of a strong bite force, and its limb structure points towards efficient locomotion on land.

Kouyorsuch provides valuable insights into the diversity of crocodylomorphs during the Cretaceous, particularly the evolutionary trends of notosuchids towards more terrestrial niches. Its presence in the African continent contributes to our understanding of the paleobiogeography of these ancient reptiles.
