Kosteuslämpöpumput, also known as dehumidifying heat pumps or moisture-driven heat pumps, are systems that simultaneously remove moisture from the air and provide heating or cooling. Unlike traditional heat pumps that rely solely on refrigeration cycles, kosteuslämpöpumput incorporate an additional component that utilizes a desiccant material to absorb moisture. This desiccant is then regenerated, often using waste heat from the refrigeration cycle or an external heat source, thereby releasing the captured moisture.

The primary function of a kosteuslämpöpumppu is to control both temperature and humidity levels in an indoor environment. This is particularly beneficial in applications where maintaining low humidity is crucial, such as in swimming pool halls, industrial processes, or even residential buildings in humid climates. By actively removing moisture, these systems can prevent issues like mold growth, condensation, and material degradation, while also improving occupant comfort and reducing the load on conventional air conditioning systems.

The technology behind kosteuslämpöpumput often involves a desiccant wheel or a similar absorbent material that rotates through separate air streams. One stream carries the humid indoor air, where the desiccant absorbs moisture. The other stream, typically heated, passes through the saturated desiccant, releasing the moisture and regenerating the absorbent material. The absorbed moisture is then typically condensed and drained away. These systems can be complex, often integrating with existing HVAC infrastructure to optimize energy efficiency and performance.
