Korkeajännitegalvaani

Korkeajännitegalvaani (literally “high-voltage galvanism”) is a Finnish term historically used to refer to the use or observation of galvanic effects produced by high-voltage direct electric currents. In Finnish electrotherapy and early electrophysiology literature, the phrase described devices and experiments that delivered high-voltage direct current to tissue or to electrodes to produce electrochemical or physiological effects. The term derives from korkea jännite (“high voltage”) and galvaani (“galvanism”), reflecting the influence of 19th-century galvanic science on medical and industrial applications.

The concept encompasses both medical and industrial contexts. In medicine, it referred to early electrotherapy devices that claimed to stimulate nerves or muscles using direct current at high voltage. In industrial and scientific settings, high-voltage galvanic currents were explored for electroplating, anodizing, corrosion testing, and the study of electric currents in biological systems.

Historical usage of korkeajännitegalvaani has declined as terminology has become more precise. Modern Finnish scientific language tends to distinguish explicitly between galvanic currents, voltage levels, and specific applications, using terminology such as galvanic stimulation, electrotherapy, or high-voltage electrochemistry rather than the broad historical label.
