Koordinaattsüsteemile

Koordinaattsüsteemile, often translated as coordinate system, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, physics, and cartography used to define the precise location of points in space. It establishes a framework of reference lines or axes, typically perpendicular to each other, that intersect at a common origin. By assigning numerical values, or coordinates, to a point along each axis, its position can be uniquely identified.

The most common type is the Cartesian coordinate system, introduced by René Descartes. In two dimensions, it uses two axes, usually labeled x and y, intersecting at the origin (0,0). A point is then represented by an ordered pair (x, y). In three dimensions, a z-axis is added, and a point is represented by an ordered triple (x, y, z).

Other coordinate systems exist, such as polar coordinates, which use a distance from the origin and an angle to define a point, or spherical and cylindrical coordinates for three-dimensional space. The choice of coordinate system often depends on the specific problem or application. For instance, in navigation, latitude and longitude form a spherical coordinate system.
