Kontinuitätsprüfung, often translated as continuity testing, is a fundamental electrical test used to determine if an electrical path exists between two points. This means checking if an unbroken circuit is present, allowing electricity to flow. It is a crucial step in troubleshooting electrical circuits and verifying connections.

The basic principle of a continuity test is to measure the resistance of the circuit. If the resistance is very low, close to zero ohms, it indicates a continuous path. Conversely, a very high resistance or an open circuit suggests a break in the path, meaning electricity cannot flow. This test is typically performed using a multimeter set to its resistance or continuity mode. When the probes of the multimeter are placed on the two points being tested, if continuity exists, the multimeter will emit an audible beep or display a very low resistance reading.

Kontinuitätsprüfung is employed in a wide range of applications. Electricians use it to check wiring in buildings, automotive technicians use it to diagnose faults in vehicle electrical systems, and electronics hobbyists use it to verify solder joints and component connections. It helps identify issues such as broken wires, loose connections, blown fuses, and faulty switches. It is important to ensure the circuit being tested is de-energized before performing a continuity test to avoid damage to the testing equipment or personal injury.
