Konsumtionen

Konsumtionen, or consumption, refers to the use of goods and services to satisfy human wants. In macroeconomics, konsumtionen typically denotes household final consumption expenditure—the spending by households on goods and services. It includes durable goods (such as vehicles and appliances), nondurable goods (food and clothing), and services (healthcare, housing services, education). In national accounts, consumption is a major component of gross domestic product and is distinguished from investments in capital goods and from government spending.

The size of konsumtionen is influenced by disposable income, wealth, expectations, interest rates, and access to credit. Economists describe the relationship with a consumption function, linking consumption to income after taxes. Classic theories include the life-cycle hypothesis, which suggests people smooth spending over their lifetimes, and the permanent income hypothesis, which emphasizes expected long-run income. Relative income and behavioral factors, such as optimism or habit formation, also shape consumption patterns.

Measurement and data come from statistical agencies within national accounts, usually as household final consumption expenditure (HFCE). These figures enable comparisons across countries, track business cycles, and inform policy. Consumption shares and composition can vary with demographics, prices, taxation, and credit conditions.

Policy relevance arises because consumption drives aggregate demand and can influence inflation and growth. Governments may affect konsumtionen through fiscal policy, taxation, transfers, and credit conditions. Environmental and sustainability considerations also challenge consumption patterns, encouraging efficiency, longer product lifetimes, and shifts toward services or less resource-intensive goods.
