Konsumentenüberschuss refers to the economic gain or benefit that consumers receive when they are able to purchase a product or service for a price lower than they were willing to pay. It represents the difference between the maximum price a consumer would be willing to pay for a good or service and the actual market price they pay. This concept is a fundamental idea in microeconomics, particularly within the framework of supply and demand.

The existence of a consumer surplus arises because not all consumers are willing to pay the same amount for a good. Some individuals value the good more highly than others. When the market price is set, it is typically at a level that is acceptable to the marginal consumer. However, consumers who value the good even more highly than the market price will still purchase it, but they will experience a surplus because they would have been willing to pay more.

Consumer surplus is graphically represented as the area below the demand curve and above the market price line, up to the quantity consumed. Changes in market price or shifts in the demand curve can affect the size of the consumer surplus. For example, a decrease in the price of a good will generally lead to an increase in consumer surplus, as more consumers can now afford it or existing consumers can purchase it at a lower price. Conversely, an increase in price will reduce consumer surplus. Policymakers often consider consumer surplus when evaluating the impact of taxes, subsidies, or regulations on consumer welfare.
