Konstituentti
Konstituentti is a term used in linguistics to refer to a word or group of words that function as a single unit within a sentence's syntactic structure. These units, often called phrases, can be identified through various tests, such as substitution or movement. For example, in the sentence "The cat sat on the mat," "the cat" is a constituent, as is "on the mat." If we can replace "the cat" with a pronoun like "it" ("It sat on the mat"), it suggests that "the cat" is a constituent. Similarly, if we can move "on the mat" to the beginning of the sentence ("On the mat, the cat sat"), it also indicates its status as a constituent.
Constituents can be of different types, including noun phrases, verb phrases, prepositional phrases, and adjective phrases.
