This obstruction can occur in various places, such as the lips, teeth, or throat, and can be achieved in different ways, like stopping the airflow completely or creating friction.

The classification of consonant sounds is based on several key features. Place of articulation describes where in the vocal tract the obstruction occurs. For example, bilabial consonants like 'p' and 'm' are made with both lips. Labiodental consonants like 'f' and 'v' are made with the lower lip and upper teeth. Alveolar consonants like 't' and 'n' are produced with the tongue tip against the alveolar ridge, the bumpy area behind the upper teeth. Velar consonants like 'k' and 'g' are made with the back of the tongue against the soft palate, or velum.

Manner of articulation describes how the airflow is obstructed. Plosives, also known as stops, involve a complete blockage of airflow followed by a sudden release, such as 'p', 't', and 'k'. Fricatives involve narrowing the vocal tract to create turbulent airflow, resulting in friction, like 'f', 's', and 'th'. Nasals involve airflow passing through the nasal cavity, such as 'm', 'n', and 'ng'. Approximants, including vowels and glides like 'w' and 'y', involve minimal obstruction.

Voicing refers to whether the vocal cords vibrate during the production of a consonant sound. Voiced consonants, like 'b', 'd', and 'g', are produced with vocal cord vibration, while voiceless consonants, like 'p', 't', and 'k', are produced without it. Understanding these characteristics is crucial for analyzing and describing the sounds of spoken language.
