Kompozicije

Kompozicije, in many Slavic languages plural for kompozicija, denotes the arrangement and combination of elements to form a coherent whole. The term is used across disciplines to describe how parts relate within a system, including music, visual arts, literature, film, architecture, design, and science.

In music, a kompozicija is a musical work created by a composer. It involves selecting melodies, harmonies, rhythms, timbres, and textures, and organizing them into forms such as binary, ternary, sonata, or through-composed structures. The aim is unity, development, and expressive contrast.

In visual arts and design, kompozicija refers to the arrangement of visual elements—line, shape, color, texture, space—to guide the viewer and convey meaning. Key principles include balance, rhythm, emphasis, proportion, contrast, unity, and movement. Techniques include the rule of thirds and perspective.

In literature and film, kompozicija concerns the organization of content and form: plot structure, pacing, point of view, and the sequence of scenes or chapters. In film, it also covers shot composition—framing, camera angle, distance, and movement—to shape interpretation.

In science and engineering, kompozicija can describe the makeup of a substance or material—the elements or compounds and their relative amounts. Knowing composition helps predict properties, behaviors, and applications, such as alloys, polymers, coatings, and chemical substances.
