Kompostikäymälän

Kompostikäymälä, often translated as a composting toilet, is a waterless toilet system that treats human excreta through biological decomposition. Instead of flushing waste with water, it utilizes aerobic or anaerobic processes to break down solid and liquid waste into a stable compost-like material. This process relies on the presence of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, to break down organic matter.

These toilets typically have a special design that separates liquid and solid waste, which aids in the composting process and reduces odors. The solid waste is often mixed with a bulking agent, like sawdust, wood shavings, or coconut coir, to provide carbon and improve aeration. The separated urine can be collected and used as a liquid fertilizer after dilution, as it is rich in nutrients.

The resulting composted material is sanitary and can be safely used as a soil amendment in gardening or agriculture after a sufficient composting period, which can range from several months to over a year depending on the system and climate. Kompostikäymälät are often employed in areas where water is scarce, where connection to a sewer system is not feasible, or as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional flush toilets. They contribute to nutrient recycling and reduce water consumption.
