Ecologically and practically, these bacteria are studied for both their natural roles in fermentation ecosystems and their industrial potential. They are cultured in bioreactors to yield bacterial cellulose for use in wound dressings, tissue engineering scaffolds, flexible electronics, and other advanced materials.
