Kohtamaa

Kohtamaa is a small village located in Estonia, situated in the county of Lääne-Viru. It is situated on the northern coast of the Baltic Sea, approximately 80 kilometers to the southeast of the city of Narva.

The village has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. Archaeological findings suggest that the area has been inhabited since the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, Kohtamaa was part of the Hanseatic League, a powerful merchant guild that dominated trade in the region.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the village saw significant economic growth, driven primarily by the sector of fishing and trade. Many inhabitants of the village made a living from fishing and selling their catches in nearby markets. The geographical location of Kohtamaa made it a strategically important area, connecting the regions of Estonia, Russia, and other neighboring countries.

Today, Kohtamaa remains a small residential community, with a few dozen permanent residents. While it still has some historical significance, the village no longer serves as an economically or administratively significant location in the region. It lies in nearly unaltered condition, serving as an example of an old village in the area.

Encircled by state-owned woodland, pastures, and gardens, the village and the surrounding land offer opportunities for natural preservation efforts, alongside other values related to regional heritage, history, and ecology.
