Kohorsztanulmányok refers to a type of observational study in epidemiology and social sciences that follows a group of individuals (a cohort) over time to investigate the incidence of various outcomes, such as diseases or behavioral changes. These studies are characterized by their prospective nature, meaning that participants are identified and enrolled before the outcome of interest has occurred. Researchers then collect data on exposures or characteristics of the cohort members and track them to observe who develops the outcome.

There are two main types of cohort studies: prospective and retrospective. Prospective cohort studies begin at the present time and follow participants into the future. Retrospective cohort studies, on the other hand, use historical data to reconstruct a cohort and then look back to determine exposures and outcomes. Cohort studies are valuable for establishing temporal relationships between exposures and outcomes, which is crucial for inferring causality. They can also be used to calculate incidence rates and relative risks. However, they can be time-consuming, expensive, and susceptible to loss to follow-up, where participants drop out of the study. Bias can also be a concern, particularly if the exposure status is known to the researcher or participant. Despite these limitations, cohort studies remain a cornerstone of epidemiological research for understanding disease etiology and risk factors.
