The Kohathites were one of the four main divisions of the Levites, the priestly tribe in ancient Israel. The Kohathites were descended from Kohath, the second son of Levi. Their primary role was the care and transport of the most sacred objects of the Israelite sanctuary, including the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the menorah (lampstand), the altars of incense and burnt offering, and the utensils used in the sanctuary. These duties were considered highly significant and were entrusted to them due to their lineage.
