Koepalatyypin

Koepalatyypin is the Estonian term used in medical pathology to refer to the type of biopsy used to obtain tissue samples for diagnostic evaluation. In clinical documentation it denotes the sampling method and approach chosen to acquire material from a suspected lesion.

Biopsy types encompassed under the concept include fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA), core needle biopsy (CNB), incisional biopsy, excisional biopsy, punch biopsy, endoscopic biopsy, skin biopsy, and surgical biopsy. The choice depends on lesion size, location, suspected diagnosis, and the need to preserve architectural context and material for ancillary studies.

Purpose and implications: The selected koepalatyypin affects diagnostic yield, risk profile, and subsequent treatment decisions. For instance, FNA provides rapid cytology but may have limited histological architecture; CNB yields cores suitable for histology and molecular studies; excisional biopsy may be both diagnostic and therapeutic for accessible lesions.

Procedure and processing: Biopsy is typically performed under local anesthesia, possibly with imaging guidance such as ultrasound, CT, or fluoroscopy. Specimens are fixed, processed, and examined by a pathologist to render a diagnosis and, if needed, to guide further testing or treatment planning.

Limitations and risks: Sampling error, lesion heterogeneity, insufficient material, bleeding, infection, or pain can occur. Pre-procedure assessment and informed consent are standard parts of planning koepalatyypin.
