Knochenzements
Knochenzement, also known as bone cement, is a biocompatible material used in orthopedic surgery. Its primary function is to fix implants, such as joint replacements, to bone. It is typically a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) based substance, which is a type of acrylic plastic. The cement is supplied in two components: a powder and a liquid. These are mixed together by the surgeon at the time of use, initiating a chemical reaction that causes the cement to harden. This hardening process generates heat, which is a characteristic feature of bone cement. The setting time can be controlled by the manufacturer and adjusted by the surgeon through mixing techniques.
Once mixed, the cement is malleable and can be injected or molded into place around the implant
