Knighton

Knighton is a market town and community located in Powys, Wales, near the border with England. The town sits on the River Teme, approximately 10 miles northwest of Ludlow. Historically, Knighton has been a significant crossing point for the river, contributing to its development as a trading center.

The town's name is believed to derive from "Cnihton," an Old English term potentially referring to a group of knights or warriors who settled in the area. Evidence of its long history can be seen in the ruins of Knighton Castle, a motte-and-bailey fortification whose earthworks remain visible. St. Edward's Church, a prominent local landmark, also dates back to the medieval period.

Knighton serves as a local administrative and commercial hub for the surrounding rural area. Its economy is supported by agriculture, small businesses, and tourism, attracted by its scenic surroundings and access to outdoor activities such as walking and cycling. The Offa's Dyke Path, a national trail, passes close to the town, making it a popular stopping point for hikers. The town retains a traditional market charter, and a regular market is still held.
