Klemmungen

Klemmungen is the plural form of Klemmung, a German term that denotes clamping, binding, or jamming caused by constraining forces or an unfavorable fit. It describes situations where parts are held together or restricted by friction, wedging, or interference—whether this is deliberate (as in a clamp) or undesired (as a bind).

In engineering and manufacturing, Klemmungen occur in toolholding, fixtures, and gripping devices where clamps, collets, chucks, or vises hold a workpiece for processing. They can also arise in assemblies when an interference fit, thermal expansion, or debris increases contact forces, potentially hindering movement, causing wear, or generating heat.

Prevention and management focus on appropriate design and maintenance. This includes ensuring correct tolerances and surface finishes, proper alignment, deburring, and suitable lubrication or anti-seize measures. Using correct tightening torques and conducting regular inspections helps avoid over-tightening or progressive binding. When a klemmung occurs, remedies typically involve reducing interference, clearing obstructions, or reworking components to restore the intended clearance or fit.
