Kiväärille

Kiväärille refers to a Finnish rifle, specifically the **M/26-40** and **M/27** bolt-action rifles, which were widely used by the Finnish military during the Winter War (1939–1940) and Continuation War (1941–1944). The name "kiväärille" is derived from the Finnish word *kivääri*, meaning "rifle," and the suffix *-ille* is a plural possessive form, indicating "our rifles."

The M/26-40 was a modified version of the Finnish M/26 rifle, chambered for the 7.62×54mmR cartridge, which was originally designed for the Mosin-Nagant M/91. The M/27 was a further improved version, featuring a more robust design and better ergonomics. Both rifles were favored for their reliability, accuracy, and durability in harsh winter conditions, making them effective in the Finnish defense against Soviet forces.

The kiväärille was also used by Finnish military police, border guards, and civilian militias during wartime. Its design allowed for quick disassembly and cleaning, which was essential in the challenging Finnish climate. The rifle’s effectiveness contributed to Finland’s reputation for resourceful and adaptable military tactics.

After the wars, many kiväärille rifles were retained in Finnish service and later passed on to other countries, including Sweden and Norway, which used them in various roles. Today, they are considered historical artifacts, though some remain in private collections or museums as symbols of Finnish military ingenuity during World War II.
