Kirjutajaid

Kirjutajaid is the Estonian term used to refer to writers in a general sense. The base word "kirjutaja" denotes a person who writes, not necessarily a professional author; it can refer to authors, journalists, scribes, or anyone engaged in writing. The term is closely related to "kirjutama" (to write). In Estonian grammar, "kirjutajaid" is the partitive plural form, used in sentences like "ma kohtasin kirjutajaid" or "kirjutajaid on palju."

Historically, writing in Estonia began with scribes and clerks in medieval and early modern periods. In the 19th century, during the national awakening, writers contributed to Estonian language, culture, and public discourse, laying foundations for modern literature. In the 20th century, the field broadened to include novelists, poets, and essayists, while journalism and media created many contemporary "kirjutajaid." Today, the term can encompass authors of fiction and non-fiction, as well as journalists and essayists who publish in Estonian or in Estonian-language media.
