Kirjeet

Kirjeet is the Finnish term for letters, referring to written messages that are addressed to a recipient and delivered by postal services or by hand. The plural kirjeet is used for more than one such message. In everyday Finnish, kirje can denote personal correspondence, business letters, invitations, or formal notices, and it contrasts with less formal short messages or postcards.

The word kirje has historical roots in Finnish language development and reflects contact with other languages through postal and administrative practices. While the exact etymology is debated, the concept and terms for letters have long been part of Finnish literacy and recordkeeping. Letters have served as primary means of long-distance communication for centuries, leaving behind rich sources for historians and researchers.

In modern times, digital communication has largely replaced many traditional letters for everyday use. Emails, instant messaging, and other electronic forms are more common, but kirje remains relevant for formal or ceremonial correspondence, archival work, and literary contexts. In literature, epistolary forms—kirjeenvaihto and kirjeiden kirjoittaminen—are used to present narratives through letters, sometimes within epistolary novels or historical documents.
