Kinofilmiformaatti is a 35mm film format that employs a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and a 3-perforation rewind system, similar to the photographic 35mm film size, but with some key differences in terms of its design and functionality. This film format was specifically developed for motion pictures and consists of 35mm wide film stock that is tightly rolled onto two or three perforated edges, creating a series of plastic sprocket holes along the film's width.

In contrast to the more popular Super 35 format, the Kinofilmiformaatti is not designed to accommodate an anamorphic lens or to adapt to high-screen resolutions. The film's smaller aspect ratio and specific perforation design make it incompatible with the equipment used for Super 35 releases.

The primary advantage of this film format is its ability to produce high-quality, wide-screen images with an intermediate frame rate of around 24 frames per second. However, its compatibility limitations and narrower scope compared to other equivalent widescreen formats make it less popular for cinematic releases, driving the shift towards digital screenings and an industry-wide preference for formats like Super 35.
