Kimbanguist

The Kimbanguist Church, officially the Church of Jesus Christ on Earth by the Prophet Simon Kimbangu, is a prophetic Christian movement that originated in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) in the 1920s. It was founded by Simon Kimbangu, a Baptist convert who claimed to have received divine revelations and miraculous healing powers. Kimbangu's teachings emphasized a return to the pure teachings of Jesus Christ, advocating for spiritual renewal, social justice, and the liberation of the Congolese people from colonial oppression.

Kimbangu's activities, including his healing ministry and pronouncements against colonial rule, led to his arrest by the Belgian authorities in 1921. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and died in prison in 1951. Despite his imprisonment, his movement continued to grow, often operating underground. After Kimbangu's death, his sons, particularly Joseph Diangienda, took leadership roles and formally established the Church.

Kimbanguism is characterized by its strong emphasis on prayer, faith healing, and the veneration of Simon Kimbangu as a spiritual leader and prophet. The church's theology is rooted in Christian scripture but incorporates Kimbangu's unique interpretations and revelations. It stresses personal spiritual transformation and communal solidarity. The Kimbanguist Church has a significant following, primarily in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but also in other African countries and among the diaspora. It is recognized as a major independent African church and is a member of the World Council of Churches.
