The underlying system, kiinteistörekisteri, is a national repository maintained mainly by the National Land Survey of Finland (Maanmittauslaitos) and forms the authoritative source of a property’s legal status. Kiinteistörekisteriin refers to submitting and updating data in that register whenever a property’s details change.

It also documents ownership information, rights and encumbrances such as mortgages (rasitteet and kiinnitykset), building rights, and any restrictions or servitudes that affect the property.
