Kiinalaiseen

Kiinalainen is a type of coffee-brewing method originating from Finland. It is also known as "Finnish coffee" or "coffee at the chaff" among coffee connoisseurs.

The term "kiinalainen" literally translates to "Chinese" in Finnish, which can be misleading as this coffee-brewing method has no direct connections to Chinese culture or traditions. The name is believed to have been assigned due to the fact that the brewing process involves stirring the coffee grounds in a circular motion, resembling the way Chinese traditionally mix and serve other types of beverages.

The kiinalainen method involves using a metal coffee filter, known as a positive filter, to strain the coffee grounds. Coffee beans are ground to a finer consistency than usual and then brewed with boiling water. The brew is then stirred in a circular motion to distribute the coffee grounds evenly. This steadies the grounds at the bottom of the pot while the liquid rises and then settles above the grounds.

Traditionally, kiinalainen coffee is served in a specific type of vessel called a "cihan". Kiinalainen is known for its smooth and balanced flavor, with a hint of sweetness and a more diluted brew compared to other methods. The unique preparation and serving style of kiinalainen have made it a staple in Finnish coffee culture, particularly among older generations.
