Kiillottuvuuteen

Kiillottuvuuteen is a Finnish illative case form of kiillottuvuus (and, less commonly, kiillotus), used to refer to the state or quality of being polished or glossy. The noun kiillottuvuus denotes shininess or gloss on a surface, while kiillotus more specifically refers to the act of polishing. The illative form kiillottuvuuteen marks movement toward that state and is used when describing aims, processes or conditions that lead to a glossy finish.

In practice, kiillottuvuuteen appears mainly in technical or academic Finnish. It is common in fields such as materials science, surface finishing, and product documentation, where the appearance of a surface is a design or quality parameter. Examples include descriptions of processes designed to achieve a glossy finish or analyses of how a surface will look after treatment: “Pinnan kiillottuvuuteen vaikuttavat sekä hionta- että kiillotustekniikat.” “Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kiillottuvuuteen johtavien käsittelyjen vaikutuksia.”

The term is relatively specialized and more frequent in technical discourse than in everyday speech. In ordinary language, kiillotus (polishing) or kiilto (gloss/shine) are more common when referring to shine, while kiillottuvuuteen is used when the discussion centers on the state or potential to become glossy in a directional sense.
