Kiertokanki

A kiertokanki, often translated as connecting rod, is a crucial component in internal combustion engines and reciprocating piston engines. Its primary function is to transmit the force from the expanding gases in the cylinder to the crankshaft, converting linear motion into rotational motion. The kiertokanki connects the piston, which moves up and down, to the crankshaft, which rotates.

The kiertokanki typically consists of a shaft with two ends. One end, the small end or piston pin end, attaches to the piston via a piston pin or gudgeon pin. The other end, the big end or crankpin end, attaches to a crankpin on the crankshaft. This big end is usually split to allow for assembly around the crankshaft and is secured with bolts and a bearing.

Materials used for kiertokanget vary depending on the engine's application and performance requirements. Common materials include forged steel alloys for strength and durability, especially in high-performance engines. Lighter materials like titanium or advanced aluminum alloys may be used in racing or specialized engines to reduce reciprocating mass and improve engine responsiveness. The design of the kiertokanki is critical for engine balance and longevity, as it experiences significant tensile and compressive stresses during operation.
