Kennecott

Kennecott refers to copper-mining related entities and places associated with the Kennecott name in the United States. It most often denotes the Kennecott Copper Corporation and its operations, as well as two notable sites: the Bingham Canyon mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, operated as Kennecott Utah Copper, and the historic Kennecott mining district in Alaska's Wrangell–St. Elias National Park.

The Kennecott Copper Corporation was a major American copper producer formed in the early 20th century. It developed and operated several mining properties, notably the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah and the Kennecott mine complex in Alaska. In 1989, the corporation was acquired by Rio Tinto, and many Utah operations have since been run as Kennecott Utah Copper, a division of Rio Tinto. The Bingham Canyon mine remains one of the world's largest open-pit copper mines; ore is processed on site, with refining and smelting operations in the region.

Kennecott, Alaska, is a copper mining camp near McCarthy that includes the Kennecott Mill Town and surrounding mines. Founded in the early 20th century by the Kennecott Copper Corporation, the district produced copper ore and supported a substantial workforce. Decline in ore production led to abandonment in the mid-20th century, and the site is now preserved within Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve as a National Historic Landmark District. Access is by road via McCarthy or by air; it is a popular stop for park visitors.
