Kemokineina

Kemokineina is a small atoll in the Tuvalu archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean. It is situated approximately 260 kilometers northeast of Nui, the southernmost island of Tuvalu, and is part of the Funafuti Atoll administrative area.

The atoll is a coral reef enclosure, approximately 4 kilometers in diameter, with shallow waters and numerous islets. Kemokineina has a land area of approximately 0.14 square kilometers, with a maximum elevation of about 2 meters above sea level. The atoll is known for its coral reefs, which provide habitat for a variety of marine life, including fish, sharks, and sea turtles.

There are no permanent residents on Kemokineina, as the atoll is uninhabitable due to its low elevation and limited resources. However, the atoll is occasionally visited by fishermen and Tuvaluan islanders who travel to the atoll to harvest fish, coconuts, and other marine resources. The atoll's remote location makes it vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and increased storm activity, which pose significant threats to its coral reefs and ecosystem.

Kemokineina has been recognized as a significant cultural site in Tuvalu, with ancient tombs and archaeological remains discovered on the atoll. As such, the atoll is protected by the Tuvaluan government and is subject to conservation efforts to preserve its historical and cultural significance. Despite its remote location, Kemokineina is an important component of the Tuvaluan archipelago's biodiversity and cultural heritage.
