Kemenes

Kemenes is a geographic and ethnographic region located in western Hungary. It is situated primarily in Vas County, with smaller portions extending into Zala and Győr-Moson-Sopron Counties. The region is known for its rolling hills, agricultural landscape, and a distinct cultural heritage. Historically, Kemenes has been an agricultural heartland, with a strong tradition of farming, particularly in the cultivation of grains and the raising of livestock.

The name "Kemenes" is believed to derive from the Hungarian word "kő" meaning stone, possibly referring to the rocky soil or the prevalence of stone structures in the area. The landscape of Kemenes is characterized by the Kemenesalja, a sub-region that is part of the foothills of the Alps. This area is traversed by several small rivers and streams.
