Kedden

Kedden is a Turkish morphological form meaning “from the cat.” It is created by attaching the ablative suffix -den (or -dan) to the noun kedi (cat). In Turkish, such suffixes mark origin, source, or starting point.

The ablative suffix -den/-dan follows vowel harmony rules. If the stem ends in e, i, ö, or ü, the form is -den; if it ends in a, ı, o, or u, the form is -dan. For kedi, which ends with the vowel i, the standard surface form is kediden. The form kedden is not the normative orthography for this noun in standard Turkish, though you may encounter it in nonstandard usage or in certain dialectal or informal contexts.

Usage of kediden (and the related keddan forms) is to express origin or departure, either literally (a place, object, or person from which something comes) or figuratively (the source of information, influence, or a starting point for an action). Examples include kediden gelen ses (“a sound coming from the cat”) or kediden çıkan koku (“a smell that comes from the cat”). The construction is a routine part of Turkish grammar and is one of the common ways to express movement away from a source.
