Kazanlak

Kazanlak is a town located in central Bulgaria, situated in the Rose Valley at the foot of the Balkan Mountains. It is the administrative center of Kazanlak Municipality within Stara Zagora Province. The town is renowned for its historical significance, particularly its connection to the ancient Thracians, and its modern role as a center for rose oil production.

Archaeological evidence points to Kazanlak as the site of significant Thracian settlements. The most famous discovery is the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dating back to the 4th century BCE. This tomb features remarkably well-preserved frescoes depicting Thracian rituals and daily life, offering invaluable insights into this ancient civilization. The town also boasts the Iskra Museum of History, which houses a rich collection of Thracian artifacts, including gold treasures.

In more recent history, Kazanlak has become synonymous with rose cultivation. The region's unique microclimate is ideal for growing the Damask rose (Rosa damascena), from which high-quality rose oil is extracted. This rose oil is a crucial ingredient in the perfume and cosmetics industries worldwide. The annual Rose Festival, held in early June, celebrates this tradition with parades, folk performances, and the crowning of a Rose Queen, attracting numerous tourists. The economy of Kazanlak is significantly influenced by agriculture, particularly rose growing, and related processing industries, as well as machine building and tourism.
