Kaukojäähdytys, also known as district cooling, is a system for distributing chilled water or another coolant from a central plant to multiple buildings. This chilled water is then used for air conditioning and other cooling purposes within those buildings. The system typically consists of a central cooling plant, insulated underground pipes that carry the chilled water to and from the buildings, and heat exchangers within each building to transfer the cooling from the district system to the building's internal HVAC systems.

District cooling offers several advantages over individual building cooling systems.
