Katágoria

Katágoria (Greek: κατηγορία) is a term used in Greek to denote a category or classification. In modern Greek, it refers to any grouping of items that share defining features, such as product categories, genres, or taxonomic groupings. The word is also used in academic and technical contexts to describe theoretical groupings in logic, philosophy, linguistics, and information organization.

Historically, katégoria appears in Aristotle's Categories, a foundational text in Western philosophy that outlines a system of basic kinds of being used to categorize things and propositions. The term was transmitted into Latin as Categoriae and into English as Categories, and the modern Greek usage continues to cover both everyday and technical senses.

In contemporary usage, the term spans several domains: philosophy and logic as a way to classify entities; linguistics as grammatical or semantic categories such as tense or aspect; library and information science as subject categories and classification schemes; data science and statistics as a label for variables with a fixed set of values; commerce and media as product categories and content genres. In legal Greek, katágoria can also denote an accusation or charge, depending on context.
