Kationinvaihto, often translated as cation exchange, is a chemical process where mobile cations in a solution are displaced by other cations in a solid material, or vice versa. This phenomenon is primarily utilized in ion-exchange resins, which are insoluble solid polymers containing charged functional groups. These functional groups are typically acidic or basic, allowing them to attract and bind oppositely charged ions, which are in this case, cations.

The process involves an equilibrium where cations in the solution compete with cations bound to the solid resin for exchange sites. For example, if a resin is pre-loaded with sodium ions (Na+) and is then exposed to a solution containing calcium ions (Ca2+), the calcium ions will preferentially bind to the resin, releasing sodium ions into the solution. This is because calcium ions often have a higher affinity for the exchange sites due to their higher charge density.

Kationinvaihto has numerous practical applications. It is widely employed in water softening, where calcium and magnesium ions, responsible for hardness, are removed from water by exchanging them for sodium ions. It is also used in the purification of chemicals, the separation of rare earth elements, and in analytical chemistry for the pre-concentration of trace metals. In environmental applications, it can be used to remove heavy metal contaminants from wastewater. The effectiveness of kationinvaihto depends on factors such as the concentration of ions, the type of resin used, the pH of the solution, and the temperature.
