Kationevahetus

Kationevahetus, also known as ion exchange, is a chemical process in which ions in a solution are exchanged for ions attached to an exchange material, such as ion exchange resin. This process is widely used in various industries for purification, separation, and recovery of ions.

The exchange material is typically a solid matrix with functional groups that carry a fixed charge. These functional groups can be positively charged (cation exchange) or negatively charged (anion exchange). The ion exchange process involves the solution of interest coming into contact with the exchange material, where the ions in the solution are attracted to and replace the ions on the exchange material.

Cation exchange resins are used to remove cations from a solution, such as removing calcium and magnesium ions from water to prevent scaling in boilers and pipes. Anion exchange resins are used to remove anions, such as removing chloride ions from water to soften it.
