Kategorialla

The approach assigns to each linguistic unit a category, such as S for a sentence, NP for a noun phrase, or N for a noun, and specifies how these categories may be combined through functional applications to yield larger constituents with correct syntax and interpretation.

The word kategorialla derives from kategoria (category) with the suffix -lla, which marks a field of study or domain in Finnish. In practice, kategorialla emphasizes the combinatory properties of syntax: when a functional category, such as S\NP, combines with an NP, it yields an S. Similar analyses underlie frameworks such as combinatory categorial grammar and certain formal semantics approaches.

Researchers and educators use kategorialla to describe both theoretical analyses of sentence structure and practical methods for parsing in computational linguistics. The approach supports formal descriptions of how linguistic meaning is built up through the interaction of category and function, and it provides tools for explaining cross-linguistic variation in word order and agreement.

Example analyses typically start from simple sentences in English, such as The cat sees the dog. In a categorial account, The cat is an NP, sees is a functional category like (S\NP)/NP, and the dog is an NP; combining these elements yields a complete S. More complex phenomena, such as long-distance dependencies, are discussed in terms of higher-order categories and composition rules, but remain topics of ongoing discussion within kategorialla.
