Katabolizmust, also known as catabolism, is a fundamental metabolic process in living organisms. It involves the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy in the process. This energy is then utilized by the cell for various life activities such as growth, repair, and movement. Catabolism is a vital part of metabolism, working in conjunction with anabolism, which is the synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones, requiring energy.

The primary role of catabolism is to provide the necessary energy and building blocks for anabolism. During digestion, for instance, large food molecules like carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down into smaller units such as glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids. These smaller molecules can then be absorbed and further catabolized to release energy through cellular respiration. Key pathways involved in catabolism include glycolysis, the Krebs cycle, and beta-oxidation.

The energy released during catabolic reactions is typically captured in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which serves as the main energy currency of the cell. When ATP is hydrolyzed, it releases energy that powers cellular work. Without catabolism, cells would be unable to generate the energy required to sustain life. Disruptions in catabolic processes can lead to various metabolic disorders and diseases.
