Kasvupisteitä, a Finnish term meaning "growth points" or "meristems" in English, refers to the areas of actively dividing plant cells responsible for growth. These specialized regions are found in specific locations on the plant, enabling it to increase in length and girth. The primary types of meristems are apical meristems and lateral meristems.

Apical meristems are located at the tips of roots and shoots, driving primary growth. This is the growth that elongates the plant, allowing roots to penetrate soil and shoots to reach for sunlight. The shoot apical meristem is crucial for the development of leaves, flowers, and stems, while the root apical meristem is responsible for root elongation and the formation of lateral roots.

Lateral meristems, on the other hand, are responsible for secondary growth, which increases the diameter of roots and stems. The two main types of lateral meristems are vascular cambium and cork cambium. Vascular cambium produces secondary xylem (wood) and secondary phloem (inner bark), contributing to increased width and the transport of water and nutrients. Cork cambium produces cork, the outer protective layer of bark.
