Karshi

Karshi is a city in southern Uzbekistan, located in the Kashkadarya Region. It is the administrative center of the region. The city is situated on the Zarafshan River, approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Tashkent. Karshi has a long history, with evidence of settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. It was an important center on the Silk Road and was known for its trade and crafts.

Historically, Karshi was known by various names. During the Timurid era, it was a significant city. In the 19th century, it became part of the Emirate of Bukhara. Following the Russian conquest, it was incorporated into Russian Turkestan. After the establishment of the Soviet Union, Karshi was industrialized, with a focus on cotton processing and oil extraction.

Today, Karshi is a major industrial and cultural center. Its economy relies on agriculture, particularly cotton cultivation, and the processing of natural gas extracted from nearby fields. The city is home to several educational institutions, including Karshi State University. Notable landmarks include the historical mausoleums and the modern infrastructure reflecting its development. The climate in Karshi is continental, characterized by hot summers and cold winters. The population is predominantly Uzbek.
