Karboksüülrühmaks

Karboksüülrühmaks is the Estonian term for a carboxyl group. A carboxyl group is a functional group in organic chemistry composed of a carbon atom double-bonded to one oxygen atom and single-bonded to another oxygen atom. This second oxygen atom is also bonded to a hydrogen atom. The general formula for a carboxyl group is -COOH.

Carboxyl groups are acidic due to the polarity of the carbon-oxygen double bond and the ability of the single-bonded oxygen atom to stabilize a negative charge through resonance after the hydrogen ion is lost. This makes compounds containing carboxyl groups, known as carboxylic acids, capable of donating a proton.

Carboxylic acids are a fundamental class of organic compounds and are found in many important biological molecules, such as amino acids and fatty acids. They play crucial roles in metabolism and are used in the synthesis of esters, amides, and acid halides, which are themselves important in various chemical processes and products. The presence of a carboxyl group significantly influences the physical and chemical properties of a molecule, affecting its solubility, reactivity, and acidity.
