Karboksyyliryhmänsä is a Finnish term referring to the carboxyl group itself, -COOH. This functional group is a fundamental building block in organic chemistry and is characterized by a carbonyl group (C=O) bonded to a hydroxyl group (-OH). The carboxyl group is weakly acidic due to the ability of the hydroxyl proton to dissociate, forming a carboxylate anion (-COO⁻).

Compounds containing the carboxyl group are known as carboxylic acids. These acids are ubiquitous in nature and play crucial roles in biological processes.
